How to prepare for your branding session!

July 29, 2021
Education  ·  Photography  ·  Tips & Technique

Hey friend! Get ready for some must-read tips that will take your branding and portrait session to the next level. Discover how to define your brand, create consistency, highlight your products, and find inspiration with a Pinterest board. We’ll also cover location choice and the importance of hair and makeup. So, let’s dive in and make your session an unforgettable success!

Define Your Brand: Before we dive into the photoshoot, it’s crucial to have a clear vision of your brand. Take a moment with a pen and paper and jot down 10 descriptive words that best describe your brand and the vibe you want to convey. These words will help guide our session and ensure we capture the heart of your brand. This session is all about bringing your branding vision to life through every aspect of our work together.

Consistency is Key: Consistency and cohesiveness are vital for building trust with your target audience. Whether someone is visiting your website, social media, or viewing your branded documents, you want them to see a sense of consistency throughout. This consistency can be achieved through your choice of colors, the style of your outfits, and the overall vibe you project. Remember, your brand is unique to you, so regardless of who your photographer/videographer is, stay cohesive and let your brand flow through your photo session.

Highlight Your Products and Props: Depending on your brand, there may be specific items or props that are essential to capture. Think about what you use daily to build your business and create your products. These items are vital and should be featured in your branding photo session. Carefully select your items and plan out your ideas and concepts in advance.

4 types of photos to have for your business or brand

Pinterest for Inspiration: Building an inspiration board on Pinterest is incredibly valuable. These photos can convey your vibe, colours, aesthetics, poses, and more. Having this board allows me to instantly understand the essence of what you’re aiming for in your branding photo session.

Location Matters: Selecting the right location that aligns with your brand and vibe is crucial. This decision ties into the consistency and cohesiveness of your brand. You have numerous options, such as a beautiful outdoor setting, your store or office, or even a rented space. I’m based in Abbotsford, BC, but I have an array of amazing locations throughout the Fraser Valley and Vancouver area that I can recommend.

Consider Hair and Makeup: Your branding session is all about capturing you at your best. While you might have everything else planned out, don’t overlook the importance of hair and makeup. If you’re not confident in doing it yourself, consider hiring a professional. I even have a promo with an incredible artist in the Fraser Valley you could choose. After all, your pretty face will be featured in every single photo, and you’ll want to feel your absolute best.

Choosing the Right Outfit: Uncertain about what to wear? Let’s keep it simple and versatile. Opt for neutrals and solid colors to create a timeless look that seamlessly aligns with your brand. Consider building your outfit around a strong base, like a classic dress or well-fitted trousers and a top. To add variety without the hassle of multiple outfit changes, bring along a few different tops like a blazer, cardigan, or sweater. This way, you can easily switch up your look during the session, saving time and ensuring you have a range of captivating images that showcase your style.

Relax and Have Fun: Finally, on the day of the session, relax! As your photographer, it’s my job to keep you at ease and ensure you have fun. We’ve done all the prep work, discussed everything you have in mind, and now it’s time to enjoy the process. There won’t be any awkward, stiff poses or forced smiles—that’s just not my style. We’ll have a blast, capture your true vibe, and create images that authentically represent you and your brand.

So, with these preparations in mind, you’re all set to make the most of your branding and portrait session. Let’s create some amazing visuals that truly reflect the heart and soul of your brand! If you have any questions or want to discuss any specific ideas further, feel free to reach out. I’m here to make this experience as enjoyable and successful as possible.

"When I decided to rebrand, I knew I needed a photographer who could capture a few quality images of someone who doesn’t love being in front of a camera. After doing a Google search and reading a few recommendations, I landed on Kate Paterson’s website. Her photos immediately stood out and her personality shone through the words on the page. I trusted my gut and booked her, and I’m so glad I did.

I went into the shoot hoping for a few great photos, and I ended up with dozens I absolutely loved. In fact, I couldn’t narrow it down to just a few — when I asked friends to help me choose from the proofs, almost every photo was someone’s favourite. It was a good problem to have!

Kate just works her magic. She creates an environment where all you have to do is show up as yourself — and she captures the very best version of that.

Highly recommend. Kate’s the one to choose."
